Teen released from jail
The 18-year-old Grand Junction man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that left his friend seriously injured this weekend was released from jail Tuesday afternoon on a personal-recognizance bond.
Cory John Colby, of 256 Gettysburg St., was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of vehicular assault while driving in a reckless manner and vehicular assault while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, after allegedly causing the single-car wreck near the intersection of 18 and J 3/10 roads by striking a power pole while driving an estimated 64 miles per hour.
While Colby walked away from the wreck, his passenger, identified in police reports as 18-year-old Tanner Crosby of Fruita, had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The affidavit for Colby’s arrest said that when a Fruita police officer arrived at the scene of the wreck shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, “Colby was distraught and admitted to witnesses that he had been driving and was afraid he had killed his friend.”
The officer noted an alcoholic smell on Colby’s breath, that he was unsteady on his feet, and unable to complete sobriety maneuvers. Crosby was unconscious when police arrived, and was hospitalized with serious injuries, including brain hemorrhages, broken ribs and internal injuries, according to an arrest report.
While police originally said Crosby was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, it’s not clear if he is still there or whether he is listed under a different name.
Representatives of the hospital said nobody named Tanner Crosby was listed as a patient on Tuesday.
