Inmate walks away

An inmate working on a work crew at the Delta City Cemetery on Monday walked away from the work site, and was picked up along U.S. Highway 50 a short time later, according to police.

Ray E. Butler, 55, allegedly walked away from the site sometime between 1:45 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., and was taken into custody in the 700 block of Highway 50 North at 2:43 p.m., the Delta Police Department said.

Nearby schools were put on shelter-in-place status as a precaution, police said, but no schools, students or staff were endangered during the incident.

School briefly on lockdown

Pear Park Elementary was briefly on lockdown Tuesday morning as Mesa County sheriff’s deputies searched for a man who ran from them, according to school and law enforcement officials.

Deputies responded to the 3000 block of Sandpiper Avenue at 7:28 a.m. on a report of a suspicious car, sheriff’s spokeswoman Megan Terlecky said. Deputies, who found two men sleeping in the car, arrested one on suspicion of drug-related charges. The second man ran away.

“Because kids were walking around heading to school … they didn’t want to take any chances,” Terlecky said. The school was put on shelter-in-place at 8:32 a.m, and students who were being dropped off during the incident were ushered into the building with the help of law enforcement, according to District 51. The lockdown was lifted before 9 a.m. after law enforcement determined the man was not a threat.
