Man accused in assault

A Grand Junction man accused of barging into his neighbor’s trailer Sept. 4 and bludgeoning him over the head with a wooden walking stick could be charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree assault, both felonies.

Ruben Jose Gutierrez, 58, was taken into custody and hospitalized after police responded to an assault report at Rocky Mountain Court trailer park, 445 Fourth Ave., an arrest report said. Gutierrez’s 31-year-old neighbor reported that after an exchange of aggressive text messages, Gutierrez walked into his trailer and said, “I’m gonna kill you,” the report said.

The younger man, who was bleeding “profusely” from his head when police arrived, said he grabbed a walking stick to defend himself, but Gutierrez grabbed it and “hit him in the head with it approximately four times,” the report said.

Public Defender Kristin Westerhorstmann said Tuesday that Gutierrez was hospitalized for multiple days and had several broken bones and a concussion as a result of the fight.

Mesa County Judge Craig Henderson ordered Gutierrez to stay in custody in lieu of a $5,000 cash-only bond.
