Hikers spend night in rain
A local husband, wife and their dog spent a rainy and cold night north of Cameo after they reportedly became lost on a hiking trip that started Monday afternoon.
Donnie and Rhiannon Smith were reached by rescuers around 9 a.m. Tuesday after spending the night under a large rock in the Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Range, Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said. They ended up driving home in the car they left about 3 p.m. Monday at the Coal Canyon Trailhead, north of the Cameo Power Plant.
“Aside from being tired and hungry, they were fine,” Benjamin said.
Relatives called 911 about 6 a.m. Tuesday after trying unsuccessfully to locate the couple themselves, Benjamin said. Sheriff’s search and rescue units were deployed and the wayward couple were reached via helicopter, she said.
They were dressed in shorts, lightweight jackets and brought matches that wouldn’t strike, she said.
