Knife attack leads to arrest
A 39-year-old woman who witnesses saw on top of a man and wielding a knife in front of a Mesa County liquor store Tuesday night is facing a felony assault charge.
Amanda Kay Sawyer was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of Redlands Liquor, 2518 Broadway, an arrest report said. Two witnesses reported seeing Sawyer on top of the 33-year-old man, described by a Mesa County sheriff’s deputy in the report as having cuts and blood on his face.
“(One witness) reported the male was begging for help and asking him to take the knife away from the female,” the report said.
Both Sawyer and the victim denied being in an altercation, and said they had “fallen.”
“In the ambulance on the way to the hospital (Sawyer) made a statement … saying, ‘He’s lucky I didn’t stab him in the neck,’ and ‘Second-degree assault? I should have stuck him. How about first-degree assault with a deadly weapon?’”
Mesa County Judge Bruce Raaum ordered Sawyer, whose attorney described her as homeless, to remain in custody on a $1,000 cash-only bond Wednesday afternoon.
Coroner: Trail death natural
A 64-year-old Grand Junction man who was found dead on the Liberty Cap Trail at Colorado National Monument Tuesday morning died of a sudden cardiac arrest, according to the Mesa County Coroner.
Coroner Dean Havlik wrote in a press release Wednesday that the man — who hasn’t been named — apparently suffered a sudden cardiac event while hiking.
“It also appeared he had started his hike that same morning,” Havlik said.
No further information was released.
