The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Department said two sisters drowned in a pond in what appears to have been an accident over the weekend.

The Associated Press reported the sisters, ages 4 and 8, were in a pond near Gunnison on Saturday afternoon but that authorities couldn’t say whether they were being supervised by an adult. One of the girls was pronounced dead at Gunnison Valley Hospital and the other died at Children’s Hospital in Aurora. The sheriff’s office said the pond is on private land.
