Bobbys more benign Birthday Bash
Several weeks ago, when the Mesa County commissioners approved a permit for Bobby’s Birthday Bash, we made clear our concerns about the country music concert being allowed the same weekend as the well-established Country Jam concert in another part of the county.
Those concerns remain.
However, it is welcome news that Bobby Willis and others working on the June concert at Mesa County Fairgrounds have significantly scaled back their concert plans.
Now, they are talking about 10,000 to 12,000 people, instead of as many as 20,000 — which might have been the largest concert attendance ever at the fairgrounds.
Equally important, the promoters have opted not to sell alcohol during the concert or allow patrons to bring their own onto the site. They have also scaled back camper parking at the fairgrounds.
And, because they expect fewer people, they are no longer planning to run shuttle buses from a parking site four miles away.
There are still legitimate concerns about noise, traffic and competition with Country Jam. But Bobby Willis and his staff deserve credit for listening to the worries expressed by neighbors of the fairgrounds and others, and retreating to a more manageable concert plan.
