Body found in Delta ditch was man, 34, from Arkansas

DELTA — Police have identified the man whose body was found in a drainage ditch in Delta last month as 34-year-old Billy Joe Green of Springdale, Ark.

Green died from exposure Feb. 21, according to Delta Police Chief Robert Thomas.

Police released a sketch of Green and photos of his tattoos Feb. 24 in hopes someone would come forward with information.

According to Thomas, an inmate in the Mesa County Jail recognized Green through a media report. The inmate told Mesa County Sheriff’s Department officers, and they contacted the Delta Police Department.

“The individual observed the media reports and recognized the sketch and identified (Green’s) identifiers and knew the deceased was an acquaintance,” Thomas said.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation confirmed Green’s identity through fingerprint analysis.

Thomas praised the community’s involvement in identifying Green, saying the CBI, Delta police and local media formed a critical partnership to determine Green’s identify. Without the media’s help, Thomas said he didn’t think anyone would have come forward to identify Green.

Thomas said the sketch of Green that was distributed to the media was done by Gil Stone, a former investigator with the Mesa County District Attorney’s Office. Stone’s position in December fell victim to county-wide layoffs.

“This individual had loved ones, and our ultimate goal was to contact those loved ones, so this individual could have a proper burial,” Thomas said.
