Bond set at $100,000 for accused molester

A Grand Junction man is accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl and attempting the same against her friend after both girls were provided alcohol, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Harold Antone Huff, 59, was advised Monday following his weekend arrest on a Mesa County Sheriff’s Department warrant listing one count each of sexual assault on a child, attempted sexual assault on a child and sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Public Defender Stephanie Fairbanks argued Huff’s physical and mental issues, which were not specified, require treatment he can’t get at the Mesa County Jail. Huff should be freed on a low bond in order to travel to the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center, she said.

District Attorney Pete Hautzinger objected, noting an unrelated pending burglary case against Huff and “aggravated” allegations in Huff’s new arrest.

County Judge Gretchen Larson set bond at $100,000 cash or surety. He was ordered to have no contact with children under 18.

A Sheriff’s Department investigation into Huff’s behavior around two girls, both 12, started Oct. 26 after a woman said she’d kicked Huff out of her home in Clifton.

An alleged victim said she and her friend were laying in bed when she woke up feeling Huff next to her and rubbing her leg, the affidavit said. The girl said she got up and went to her mother’s room. Minutes later, her friend joined her in her mother’s room.

“(First girl) said she woke her mother and told her Tony was touching her and (second girl) while they were sleeping,” the affidavit said.

He denied touching them, insisting they made up the allegation “because they have his alcohol,” the affidavit said. The girls later told investigators they were provided peach Schnapps.

The first girl later told investigators Huff had inappropriately touched her twice before but couldn’t recall how old she was at the time.

During the investigation, a third girl reported she was inappropriately touched by Huff when she around 13 in Utah. The incident was reported to authorities, but the affidavit doesn’t indicate what became of the report.
