Bond set at $500,000 in fatal Fruita shooting
Bond was set at $500,000 Sunday for Wayne Fredrick Gert, a 37-year-old Fruita man arrested Friday evening on suspicion of killing his roommate, Henry John Trisler Jr.
Gert appeared calm while speaking to a judge during a hearing Sunday morning over closed-circuit broadcast from Mesa County Jail. Gert was told the bond amount and that he’s scheduled to appear before a judge again at 8 a.m. Friday.
Gert’s bond can be paid by putting up $500,000 in cash or property or through a surety bond, in which a person pays a portion of the bond amount to a bondsman, who pays the full amount to get a person out of jail.
Gert told a police officer Friday that he shot Trisler in self-defense in the home where they lived at 530 Virgo Way, according to an arrest affidavit. Gert was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and booked into jail early Saturday..
Trisler, 37, died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a Mesa County Coroner’s Office report. The manner of death was homicide, according to the report.
Funeral services for Trisler are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, according to a death notice sent to the Daily Sentinel Sunday. The notice said Trisler was the father of three children.
