Borders store in Grand Junction to close

Grand Junction’s Borders, 2464 U.S. Highway 6& 50, is one of about 200 book stores to close as the bookstore chain files for bankruptcy, according to news reports.

Other stores closing in Colorado include Borders in Aurora, Boulder, Dillon, Greeley and Littleton.

Borders, which began in 1971, operates more than 650 stores.

Company officials said the stores will remain open as the company proceeds through the bankruptcy process and it would honor coupons and gift cards, the company said in a statement.

Borders is listed at $1.29 billion in debt and $1.27 billion in assets according to a filing in United States Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, according to a report by the New York Times.
