Boy dead, girl critical after wreck near Meeker

A 9-year-old boy died from his injuries and a 12-year-old girl suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision south of Meeker on Tuesday.

Stone Martin was pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m. Wednesday, while Alahna Martin remained in critical condition at a Denver hospital, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The children were backseat passengers in a 2004 Dodge Caravan driven by Vanessa Martin, 30, of Meeker. The southbound vehicle spun out of control on Colorado Highway 13 about a mile south of Meeker just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, the State Patrol said.

Troopers said the Caravan drifted onto the right shoulder of the roadway and spun counterclockwise 226 feet into the northbound lane of traffic, where is was struck by an oncoming 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The Caravan went down a 26-foot embankment into a barbed-wire fence.

Vanessa Martin and the driver of the Impala, Carla Slagle of Rangely, suffered moderate injuries, the State Patrol said.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors, troopers said.
