Boy died of shot to head, coroner says

A Delta County boy who died Saturday suffered a possible accidental gunshot wound to the head, Delta County Coroner Kevin Lucy said Tuesday.

Jean-Paul LaBossiere Jr., 13, and an unidentified 13-year-old boy were at a home Thursday afternoon on J 80 Road near Hotchkiss and were examining a .22-caliber revolver when the weapon discharged, authorities said. The Coroner’s Office ruled LeBossiere’s death was homicide.

“The ruling of homicide does not imply that the death could not have been an accident, and the Sheriff’s office investigation continues,” Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said in a news release.

LaBossiere was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital, where he died Saturday.

McKee on Tuesday said the two boys were home alone around the time of the shooting, which was reported to authorities just after 2 p.m. Thursday. LaBossiere was visiting his friend at the home of the friend’s grandparents.

McKee declined comment on a host of other questions because of an active investigation.

A death notice received Tuesday by The Daily Sentinel said LaBossiere will be honored at a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cedaredge Middle School.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials to be sent to the Jean-Paul “Junior” LaBossiere Jr. memorial fund, in care of Surface Creek Bank, 945 S. Grand Mesa Drive, Cedaredge 81416.
