The Colorado Education Association endorsed Jill Brake of Pueblo for the open seat on the Colorado Board of Education.

Brake, a Democrat, faces Marcia Neal of Grand Junction, a Republican, for the seat.

The association selected Brake because of her activity at the state level, said Deborah Fallin of the association.

Brake served as president of the Colorado Association of School Boards and is familiar with issues such as the Colorado Student Assessment Program and new models that are used that measure the growth of individual students.

Neal, a former District 51 board member and former Grand Junction High School teacher, noted that she was endorsed by the Mesa Valley Education Association in both of her bids for the school board.

“I think most people knew I was very supportive of teachers,” Neal said.

The Colorado Education Association boasts 38,000 members statewide.
