Bravissimo to councilors

How about a curtain call for members of the Grand Junction City Council? They deserve an ovation for their performance Wednesday evening, during which they formally fulfilled their commitment to provide $3 million to the Avalon Theatre renovation project.

Only one councilor, Marty Chazen, voted against the funding.

We have stated our reasons for supporting the city spending on the Avalon in previous editions. Suffice it to say we agree with many in the community who believe that supporting cultural endeavors is one function of modern city government. Additionally, we and many others believe there will be a direct economic benefit for the community from the project.

It will be interesting to view the corner of Seventh and Main a few years from now, once the full renovation of the Avalon is complete and the theater has a robust event schedule. We hope other properties, now vacant, will be engaged and busy as well.

But for now, it’s enough to thank the five city councilors who voted to continue the commitment to the Avalon made by the previous City Council more than a year ago.

Yes, kudos to the City Council for voting for the pet project of a few influential people.  Now where’s the pressure on them to vote for parks and things that the rest of us use?
