Bulldogs’ late rally falls short in Bill Fanning Classic

Jerid Huggins might be one of the best things to happen to the Palisade High School baseball team.

The Woodland Park starting pitcher overwhelmed the Bulldogs for the first five innings Saturday before Palisade adjusted and made a late run.

In the final day of the Bill Fanning Classic, the late surge wasn’t enough as the Panthers held on to win 7-6 at Suplizio Field.

“(Huggins) threw really hard, and we were trying to make the adjustment,” Palisade coach Steve Moore said. “We were missing some key hits, but I’m excited we saw a good pitcher because that can help us down the road.”

Palisade (1-1) got doubles from Pete Lelich, Jordan Salazar and Drew Clinkingbeard, and Cole Cummings added a triple.

Mike Seriani started on the mound for the Bulldogs and threw five innings.

Palisade is off until March 16, when it hosts Eagle Valley

Grand Junction 5, Elizabeth 1: The Tigers responded to Friday’s 11-10 loss to Greeley West with an inspired performance on the mound from Stephen Baldwin. The sophomore struck out 13 batters in five innings.

“Baldwin was huge,” Grand Junction coach Kyle Rush said. “We learned a lot about the kids this weekend.”

Offensively, Grand Junction (2-1) was led by Mike McGovern, whose triple in the second inning gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. McGovern scored a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Casey Burns.

Grand Junction plays Wednesday at Pueblo South.

Greeley West 4, Central 0:The Warriors (1-2) out-hit the Spartans 7-6, but left nine runners on base.

“It was one of those games where everything we hit hard was right at somebody,” Central coach Chuck Yost said.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Greeley West put up two runs. The Spartans added two more runs in the sixth.

The Warriors had three sophomores throw — Kyle Rowe, Haden VanWinkle and Ryan McIvor.

“The three sophomores threw and did a good job,” Yost said. “They held a good team to four runs.”

Central’s next game is Tuesday at Pueblo East.
