Burglars break into churches

A wedding party found an unpleasant surprise Saturday morning when they opened the doors of Unity Church, 3205 N. 12th St.

The night before, vandals broke into the church, along with nearby Lighthouse Christian Center, 3506 N. 12th St. Grand Junction Police Sgt. Jim Creasy said the damage was minimal but there were signs of forced entry.

“It looks like they at least cut the screens off one window,” Creasy said.

Police officers compiled a list Saturday of what all was removed from either church, although a tuxedo and laptop were already on the list of items removed from Unity. Creasy said it looked like the same person or people broke into both churches.

“It looks like they might have taken some time in each one and eaten some food,” he said.

Creasy said the break-in looked like the work of kids, although he wasn’t sure how old the vandals might be.

Any indoor mess was cleaned by Saturday afternoon in Unity Church, and the wedding scheduled for that day went on as planned.
