Celebrate season with Christmas Bird Count

New math: What do you get when you divide 19 into one?

A Christmas Bird Count, of course.

The Grand Valley Audubon Society has portioned its single, 15-mile Christmas Bird Count circle into 19 pieces, and there’s one waiting for you.

The circle is centered on Appleton, the better to give birders an opportunity to sample every type of habitat (river, high desert and monument) in the valley.

It’s an interesting way to spend a winter morning and there’s a spot for you.

All levels of birding experience are welcome.

WHAT: The Grand Valley Audubon Society and the Christmas Bird Count.

WHERE: Throughout the Grand Valley, from river to monument.

WHEN: Sunday, Dec. 20. Some routes begin before dawn, all wind up by mid-afternoon.

WHY: The count helps researchers and biologists track bird population trends.

HOW: Contact one of the trip leaders (http://www.audubongv.org/news) or call Paul Didier at 242-8643.
