Central rallies past Raptors

The Central High School football team squared its record Friday with a 28-21 nonconference victory over Eaglecrest at the Stutler Bowl.

The Warriors spotted the Raptors the first 21 points but Central got a fumble recovery in the end zone and a Holden Reed-to-Kyle Rowe 50-yard touchdown pass to pull to within 21-14 by halftime.

“The offense was moving the ball; they just weren’t finishing it early,” Central coach Vern McGee said.

The Warriors got touchdowns in each of the final two quarters to take the victory, including a touchdown pass from Reed to Vandon Sanchez for the go-ahead score.

It was the first comeback victory of the season for Central (3-3).

“We haven’t done that,” McGee said. “Any time we were down we hadn’t battled back.”

Central resumes its Southwestern Conference schedule next Friday at home against Montrose.

Palisade lost its second consecutive Class 3A Western Slope Conference game.

Delta (4-2, 3-2 WSC) took a 7-0 lead to halftime.

Palisade (3-4, 3-2 WSC) scored on a 4-yard Terry Williams touchdown run but missed the point-after kick and Delta added a field goal in the third quarter.

In other Western Slope scores, Rock Canyon handed Montrose its first loss of the season, 40-34.

In the 3A WSC, Steamboat Springs shut out Rifle 34-0 and Moffat County blanked Eagle Valley 42-0.
