Chapel to be repaired next month

The historic Handy Chapel at White Avenue and Second Street is on the 2011 list of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places. It still serves as a church for two congregations that host services on Saturdays and Sundays. Roof repairs are one of the building’s most pressing needs.

Volunteers are being sought to help restore the chapel house roof at the historic Handy Chapel at 200 White Ave.

HistoriCorps, an organization that rounds up volunteers to restore and preserve historic buildings across the United States, is seeking able-bodied volunteers to help repair the roof May 3–6.

Volunteers can register online through Volunteeroutdoors.net or contact HistoriCorps at 303-893-4260 for information.

HistoriCorps is a partnership created by Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Preservation Inc.

Earlier this year, Colorado Preservation Inc. named Handy Chapel to its list of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places. The endangered places list helps raise awareness of historic places in the state at risk of being torn down or falling apart.

Of the 86 places named to the list since 1998, 39 have been rehabilitated or protected in some way. Twenty-two others are “on alert” for needing funds or repairs to save them. Twenty-two more have been saved from the wrecking ball, and three have not.

Handy Chapel historically served as a worship center and a place where black people new to or passing through Grand Junction could find shelter, food or a friendly face. It still serves as a church for two congregations that host services on Saturdays and Sundays.

Repairs for the chapel house roof are one of the building’s most pressing needs, according to Harry Butler, leader of the Certain Place of the Seventh Day congregation that meets in the chapel on Saturdays.
