Children learn about dental hygiene at library

Kenzie Thompson and Marlana Kevstetter demonstrate how to brush properly at the Mesa County Library.

In honor of National Dental Health Month, Kenzie Thompson and Marlana Kevstetter of Smiles for Kids were at the main branch of the Mesa County Library Wednesday afternoon to teach kids the art of good brushing.

They read stories such as “Sweet Tooth” by Margie Palatini to the children, to explain that too many sweets were bad for kids’ chompers.

“We want to teach them about good oral hygiene so they have healthy teeth their whole lives,” said Thompson.

She demonstrated the proper way to brush with an oversized pair of teeth and toothbrush. “We think that maybe parents don’t force this issue enough,” she added.

Following the presentation, they gave away goodie bags filled with dental necessities — such as paste, floss and disclosure tablets, which when chewed stain yucky plague so children know what areas need more brushing attention.

Another dental presentation will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday in the children’s center.
