City will take over Long Park scheduling

The city of Grand Junction will take over the scheduling of events at Long Family Memorial Park in Fruitvale from Mesa County.

The City Council on Wednesday night signed off on an agreement with the county whereby the city will assume responsibility for handling the more than 800 reservations made each year and managing revenue for the park, which is at 3117 F Road.

Under the agreement, which takes effect immediately, the county will pay the city roughly $38,000 this year and $28,000 in subsequent years to cover the cost of providing the services.

The county will be responsible for maintaining the 40-acre park, which features six shelters, six open play fields and one softball field.

The agreement can be renewed each year for up to five years.

With dozens of parks in the city and a larger staff in place to maintain them, the city is better equipped to oversee park operations than the county.
