City saves money on scaled-back calendar

After creating a colorful, scenic calendar for the past decade, the city of Grand Junction this year is paring down the publication in an effort to save money.

Photos in the calendar will be reproduced in black and white, and photographers who previously were paid for their submissions won’t receive checks this year, according to city spokeswoman Sam Rainguet.

The reductions will shave about $12,000 off a project that normally costs about $50,000. This year, the calendars, which will be distributed in November, will be created for about 75 cents each for the run of about 45,000. Calendars then will be mailed to residents’ homes and distributed at some local businesses and local agencies.

“The calendar is so much more than just a calendar; it also serves as our annual report to the citizens of the community, and it is the most widely distributed communication piece that we do each year,” Rainguet said in an e-mail.

The calendars are not a hit with everyone. Some people complain the city is spending money unnecessarily, especially during a recession when it must contend with decreasing revenues.

City officials nearly decided not to produce a calendar this year, but instead decided to create it by cutting costs, Rainguet said.

City officials receive numerous compliments about the publication, the main reason for continuing to create the product, Rainguet said.

In addition to the photos, the calendar contains the city’s annual report, a review of the past year and a letter from the mayor. It also contains meeting dates, community events, fundraising opportunities and a listing of city telephone numbers.
