Citywide sales taxes creep up versus previous month

Citywide sales tax collected in June is following a slow but steady, month-by-month, increasing trend since revenue bottomed out early this year.

Collections were at $4.1 million for June, which was recorded as the July 2010 amount. That’s up from the previous month’s sales tax collections of $3.8 million and up from July 2009’s total of $4.0 million.

“Generally speaking, I would say the sales tax revenues are ever so slightly moving in the right direction. However, we are far from recovering from the decline we have experienced over the last 18 months,” Grand Junction’s Financial Operations Manager Jodi Romero said in a statement.

The latest numbers remain below city projections for sales taxes. City officials initially figured the citywide revenue would be at the $4.7 million mark. City officials later revised the budget, forecasting $4.1 million in sales tax revenue.
