Clifton teen suspected of hitting 3 cars

An 18-year-old Clifton man was arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of vehicular eluding and criminal mischief after allegedly hitting three parked cars while trying to flee from authorities.

Rene Tarin Vargas allegedly ran a stop sign while driving a 1997 Jeep in Clifton on Saturday night, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

When a deputy tried to pull Vargas over for the alleged traffic violation, Vargas said “he panicked” and sped away from the deputy and ran another stop sign. He allegedly hit the cars near Lucile Avenue and 32 1/2 Road. Damage was estimated at $7,000, the arrest affidavit said.

Vargas told authorities he had no drugs or alcohol in his system. He was not charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
