The Clifton Fire Protection District and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a suspected arson Sunday in Clifton.

About 6:40 a.m., emergency personnel went to 3225 Rood Ave., No. 1, after reports of a small fire outside the residence.

Fire officials immediately smelled an accelerant in front of the apartment, said Greg Martin, assistant chief of the Clifton Fire Protection District.

After smelling the fire accelerant, the fire department and Sheriff’s Department started an investigation and deemed the fire to be arson.

No one was injured in the small blaze.

Damage to the apartment was estimated at $500 to $1,000.

The investigation continues, Martin said.
