Clifton man, 27, dies in rollover in Wyoming

A 27-year-old Clifton man who was the passenger in a vehicle involved in a rollover died Sunday on a county road in Wyoming.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Jose D. Salazar died at the scene of the crash and was trapped inside the vehicle on County Road 154 in Sublette County. Salazar had been wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the vehicle, Valdemir Villarreal, 24, of Grand Junction, was missing from the crash site when emergency personnel arrived but turned himself in to authorities three hours later at Sublette County Sheriff’s Department in Pinedale, Wyo., the patrol said. Villarreal was then flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Villarreal was driving a 1992 Toyota Camry at a high rate of speed when he failed to make a left-hand curve in the roadway, the patrol said. The vehicle rolled once.

Police are still attempting to determine how and why Villarreal left the scene of the crash.

Information from the investigation will be turned over to the Sublette County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether Villarreal faces any charges in the case, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.
