Club 20: Officials hope for 10% better response over 2000 census

The 2010 census will work with local government, as well as civic and religious leaders, to complete the head count as efficiently as possible, officials told Club 20 members Saturday.

The census in western Colorado will have headquarters in Grand Junction with a staff of 60 to 80 people and six supervisors, said Sonny Subia, who heads up the census team working with local governments in the Rocky Mountain region.

Officials hope to complete as much as possible with mail-in responses before the official April 1 count, Subia told Club 20.

Officials hope to see a 10 percent improvement over the 2000 census in the response rate to census mailers.

Households that don’t respond have to be visited by census workers who then complete the count.

An improvement of one percentage point in the response to census questionnaires can save an estimated $90 million, Subia said.
