CMU’s Robbins heats up in the Calif. desert
The Colorado Mesa University men’s golf team apparently likes the desert.
Sean Robbins fired the best round of the day Tuesday in the Skyhawk Desert Shootout at Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., a 2-under-par 70, to overtake teammate Brandon Bingaman and win individual medalist honors.
Robbins was two strokes behind Bingaman after Monday’s first two rounds, but his low round propelled him into first place at 222 after shooting 76 in each of the first two rounds.
Bingaman, who shot rounds of 78 and 72 on Monday, struggled to an 81 on Tuesday, finishing second at 231.
The 1-2 finish helped the Mavericks place third as a team at 953. South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College won the tournament at 934, with the University of California-San Diego second at 303.
The Mavericks shot team rounds of 325, 312 and 316.
The individual championship was the first of Robbins’ career. The sophomore from Aurora tied for first place last season at the Adams State Invitational, but lost in a playoff. His highest previous finish this season was fourth in the Oredigger Invitational in the fall.
Robbins placed ninth in the Mustang Intercollegiate last week in Palm Valley, Ariz.
The Mavs’ Adam Griffith shot a third-round 82 to tie for 26th at 248, Christopher Aiken tied for 41st with a final-round 89 for a 258, and Jake Jacobs tied for 48th, shooting an 83 on Tuesday to card a three-round score of 269.
