Collision injures two women

A PICKUP AND A FORD sedan collided Sunday evening along U.S. Highway 6 at 34 Road. The wreck reduced traffic to one lane for about two hours.

Two women were injured and taken to the hospital Sunday evening after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 6 between Clifton and Palisade.

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. A Dodge Ram pickup heading east was turning left onto 34 Road and struck a Ford Focus heading west on the highway, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The impact of the collision crushed the front end of the Ford.

The pickup driver said a train headlight obscured his vision and he didn’t see the car coming west, a trooper at the scene said. The train tracks run parallel to the highway.

The extent of the injuries of the two women in the Ford was unknown. Initial reports indicated the driver was unconscious and had to be extricated and rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital. The trooper, however, said he didn’t think either woman was seriously hurt.

The accident closed the westbound lane of U.S. 6 for nearly two hours.
