Collision on I-70 kills Rifle driver

A Rifle man died early Sunday in a collision on Interstate 70 near Eagle, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The man was driving a 1998 Dodge van on the interstate about 3:15 a.m. when the vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer near mile-maker 150. The van was traveling east in a westbound lane. The tractor-trailer was headed west in the westbound lane.

A 50-year-old Illinois man was driving the tractor-trailer. He was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The 44-year-old man driving the van was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from the State Patrol.

The names of both men were not released, pending notification of family members.

Weather was not considered a factor in the crash. The State Patrol is investigating alcohol as a possible contributing factor in the crash.

The westbound lanes of I-70 were temporarily closed Sunday after the crash.
