Colorado Northwestern Community College to offer new degrees

Colorado Northwestern Community College is offering a new business and banking two-year associate degree program at its five campuses and online.

John Boyd, president of the community college, said the new program was created in conjunction with First National Bank of the Rockies president Pete Waller.

“He approached me with the idea to meet the increasing need for banking professionals in the industry,” Boyd said. “Within six months, we had a program developed and ready for approval.”

According to the program Web site, the demand for banking employees will increase 4 percent in the next 10 years, and the closest school offering a similar program is 400 miles from Colorado Northwestern Community College.

The two main college campuses are in Rangely and Craig with satellite campuses in Hayden, Meeker and Oak Creek.

The program will offer courses in business statistics, principles of banking and finance, and how financial information impacts the banking industry.

Colorado Northwestern Community College also will offer a business certificate for non-degree-seeking students.

“This program is for high school graduates, nontraditional students and current bank employees looking to develop professionally,” said Kathy Powell, business and banking department chair at the community college.

The classes would be offered at night and on the weekends in addition to traditional classes.
