Colorado Supreme Court to hear Ward Churchill case

DENVER — Colorado’s Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal from a former University of Colorado professor trying to get his job back after he was terminated during a public outcry for his essay comparing some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi.

A jury in July 2009 found that the school unlawfully fired Ward Churchill. A Denver District Court judge then ruled in favor of the school saying it was entitled to “quasi-judicial immunity” and awarded Churchill $1 in damages. The Colorado Supreme Court today announced that it agreed to hear the case.

Churchill’s termination in 2007 came after an essay he wrote describing some victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as “little Eichmanns,” a reference to Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi leader who helped orchestrate the Holocaust.
