Colorado National Guard units to take part in Afghanistan surge

About a dozen National Guard members from units based in Denver and Colorado Springs will be deployed to Afghanistan in the next few weeks, the Colorado National Guard said Tuesday.

A unit of more than 100 National Guard members is to be deployed to Afghanistan early next year, as well, Capt. Elena O’Bryan said.

The units to be deployed immediately are the 217th Space Company, based in Colorado Springs, and the 1917th Contracting Team, based in Denver.

The 217th Space Company provides battlefield analysis operations via satellite imagery as well as network security control, O’Bryan said.

The 193rd Military Police Battalion, based in Denver, is departing early next year to provide security operations in Afghanistan, O’Bryan said.

The Colorado Air National Guard has about half a dozen airmen from the 240th Civil Engineering Squadron deployed to Afghanistan, helping rebuild the nation.

No information as to how many western Colorado residents serve in the affected units was immediately available, but O’Bryan said all the affected guard members are Coloradans.
