Community college taps George as president

Rifle resident Russell George will serve as the next president of Colorado Northwestern Community College.

Nancy McCallin, president of the Colorado Community College System, announced the appointment Tuesday. George was the sole finalist for the job and was appointed after appearing with McCallin at open houses at the college’s Rangely and Craig campuses Thursday.

“We also asked for feedback after the meetings, and the support for him was overwhelming,” McCallin said in a news release.

George, an attorney, is a former speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. He recently concluded service as director of the state Department of Transportation, after previously directing the Department of Natural Resources and, before that, the Division of Wildlife.

He’ll begin his new job Monday. He replaces John Boyd, who left to become president of Mayland Community College in North Carolina.
