Cops seek driver who hit officer, then fled

Grand Junction police are looking for this PT Cruiser, which they believe was involved in a hit-and-run on Wednesday. A Grand Junction police officer’s cruiser was struck and the driver fled the scene.

Police Wednesday night were looking for a driver who allegedly sideswiped a Grand Junction police patrol cruiser.

Neither the officer nor the prisoner he was transporting were injured in a collision which witnesses said happened around 4 p.m. in the 1200 block of Ute Avenue. A witness said the driver of a PT Cruiser appeared to intentionally hit the officer’s vehicle, police said in a news release.

Several officers were initially called out on a report of a reckless driver on North Avenue speeding and cutting off other drivers. Police radio traffic indicated speeds topped 100 mph. The driver stopped in the Kmart parking lot, then left headed south on 28 1/2 Road, the release said.

Officers spotted the vehicle at a 28 1/2 Road convenience store, but the driver sped away south on 28 1/2 Road, then west on the Interstate 70 Business Loop. A pursuit wasn’t engaged.

The driver, still westbound on I-70B, which turns into Ute Avenue, approached another Grand Junction police officer, who was transporting a prisoner, from behind and scraped the side of the officer’s vehicle. The cruiser’s mirror was knocked off.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet tall, with a thin build. The cruiser was orange with chrome accents.

Police were asking anyone with information to call 242-6707 or Mesa County Crime Stoppers at 241-STOP, text CRIMES to 241STOP or go online to http://www.241stop.com.
