Cops identify victim of fatal car collision

A pedestrian who was killed Sunday night when he was struck by a car on Horizon Drive was identified Monday as 61-year-old Richard L. Baird, of Durango.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said Baird died of multiple blunt-force injuries and classified his death as an accident.

Authorities said Baird was trying to cross Horizon Drive between Denny’s Restaurant and Country Inns of America when he was hit by an eastbound Pontiac Grand Am around 8:10 p.m. He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and pronounced dead.

Grand Junction police spokeswoman Kate Porras said officers were called just a minute or two earlier about a man who was walking in the roadway on Horizon.

Officers interviewed the female driver of the Pontiac and another driver who was in the vicinity at the time of the accident. Police haven’t released the name of the driver.

Porras said Monday police are still investigating the accident.
