Cops: Man caught with 34 pounds of pot
A 39-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Grand Junction after members of the Western Colorado Drug Task Force found 34 pounds of marijuana in his suitcase onboard a Greyhound bus.
Ezell Pounds was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Pounds’ arrest affidavit, he was carrying 29 baggies of suspected marijuana in a black suitcase.
Pounds was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago when the Greyhound bus made a routine service stop Wednesday afternoon at the Greyhound Bus Depot, 230 S. Fifth St.
During the stop, each suitcase on the bus was examined. During the examination, a Task Force Officer lifted Pounds’ suitcase and noticed it felt heavy and smelled of perfume that is commonly used to mask the odor of drugs, the affidavit said.
Task Force officers asked permission from all passengers onboard the bus to search their suitcases and all complied, including Pounds, the affidavit said.
When officers opened Pounds’ black suitcase, they found the baggies of suspected marijuana inside, his affidavit said.
Pounds was arrested and is being held without bond at the Mesa County Jail.
