Coroner: Shawn Payne, 36, died of gunshot wounds on I-70

Shawn Payne, 36, a resident most recently of Alabama and Florida, died from multiple gunshot wounds on Interstate 70, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.

The man was not a resident of Colorado, the Coroner’s Office said.

Local authorities said Payne pointed a gun or an object that looked like a gun at police after a police pursuit that ended near the Colorado-Utah state line on Wednesday.

The man was killed by police.

A suspect matching Payne’s description was suspected of carjacking a woman’s vehicle after an attempted sexual assault at a Lakewood parking lot on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, local police identified a vehicle matching the description of the pickup the suspect had stolen at a hotel in Grand Junction near the interstate on Wednesday.

After a police pursuit on Interstate 70, police said the man allegedly ignored multiple commands to come out of the pickup truck before he exited the truck and allegedly pointed the gun at officers.
