Council approves permit for home in Seventh Street Historic District

An ordinance approved in February for the Seventh Street Historic District got its first use Wednesday night.

The ordinance, which went into effect in March, requires any homeowner on Seventh Street between Grand and Hill avenues to get approval from the Grand Junction City Council before re-configuring or changing the use of a lot or adding a fence, addition or new structure in the four-block area.

In accordance with the ordinance, Tom and Melinda Watson, who own a home at 417 N. Seventh Street, asked the council Wednesday to approve a construction permit so they could remodel their home, which was damaged in a fire Jan. 15. Council members unanimously approved the permit.

Melinda Watson said she didn’t mind going through an extra application to remodel the home, which will get new windows, a few additional bathrooms, expanded room space and a new HVAC system. The project also will help restore the front elevation of the home to its original exterior.

“I’m delighted the council is taking an eye toward historic preservation,” Watson said. “All of us on that street have the same goal — preserving a beautiful neighborhood and preserving beautiful homes.”

The Watsons and their two children are living in a rental home a few blocks away for the time being. Now that the permit has been approved, Melinda Watson said she expects construction to begin on the home “fairly quickly.”

“We hope to be back in the home by Christmas, even if we’re in sleeping bags,” she said.
