County OKs fairground improvements

Mesa County commissioners this morning approved an $820,000 contract to implement a series of improvements at the Mesa County Fairgrounds.

The project includes the construction of a new 17,550-square-foot metal barn to replace the six old stall barns, enlargement of the existing covered riding arena, creation of a designated lighted parking area and other improvements.

The work will replace structures that are roughly 40 years old and are among the most-used at the fairgrounds.

“It’s been a board priority to make sure we get these improvements done,” Commission Chairman Craig Meis said. “(They are) much needed.”

The commissioners awarded the contract to Grand Junction-based Asset Engineering Ltd. The project should be completed in the spring of 2011.
