County cancels $115,000 in unpaid property taxes
Mesa County commissioners unanimously agreed Monday to cancel more than $115,000 in unpaid personal property taxes, conceding they’re unable to collect that money because the indebted businesses most likely have closed.
State law allows county commissioners to cancel personal property taxes that are determined to be uncollectible a year from the date they became delinquent. The board’s decision covers taxes from 2002 to 2009.
The top five businesses in terms of taxes owed are:
Mesa Air Group Inc., Edina, Minn., $30,541
Emeritus Communications, Dallas, $13,940
K-9 Kar Wash, 202 North Ave., $11,595
Castaway Vending, 296 Dartmouth Lane, $7,951
Bub’s Field Sports Pub & Grill, 715 Horizon Drive, $4,978.
“Obviously we’ve exhausted any and all avenues to collect these taxes without cancellation,” Treasurer Janice Rich told commissioners.
