Crews battle fire burning west of Delta

Fire crews are battling a small blaze located about five miles southwest of the Divide Forks Campground on the north Uncompahgre Plateau west of Delta.

The blaze, known as the Franks Bench Fire, was started by lightning, and has consumed about 35 acres, according to Anne Janik, fire information officer with the U.S. Forest Service.

The fire was detected just before sunset on Friday, when it was burning about 30 acres of high-mountain timber.

Two wildland fire crews and a Bureau of Land Management engine are being used to battle the fire, which is located in remote and rough terrain, Janik said.

No structures are threatened at this time.

There are no road or trail closures at this time, but Forest Service officials are asking the public to avoid the area, particularly trails in the Blue Creek Park area of the forest.
