D51 staff to discuss new evaluations

School District 51 will take its next step toward formulating a new plan for teacher and principal evaluations later this month.

Senate Bill 191, passed by the state Legislature in 2010, requires school districts to adopt a new system of evaluating teacher and administrator effectiveness that involves more frequent evaluations that could remove a tenured teacher from nonprobationary status if the teacher receives two consecutive years of poor evaluations. The new evaluations incorporate student-test results, so Colorado schools also will have to create or buy exams that test grades and subjects not addressed by Transitional Colorado Assessment Program tests.

Districts can build their own state-approved evaluation system or follow a state model for the new evaluations. Districts statewide do not have to use the new system until the start of the 2013–14 school year. District 51 Superintendent Steve Schultz said Tuesday during a school board meeting he wants to get a head start.

On May 30, District 51 principals, teachers and directors from the elementary, middle and high school levels will meet to discuss an implementation plan for the provisions of Senate Bill 191. Results of the meeting will be shared during a school board meeting June 5.

“We want to do it now. There’s a lot to do between now and July 2013 and beyond,” Schultz told the board, adding the meeting “is a substantive step to move forward and involve staff in how we’re going to do that.”

Also Tuesday, the board approved a list of 51 temporary, part-time or nontenured district employees who will not have their contracts renewed next year. Schultz said the list is not connected to any budget cuts or reductions.


He said the district is in ntiations with the teacher-representation group Mesa Valley Education Association, and he does not know if any employees will not have their contracts renewed this fall for budget reasons, as was the case with 33 nontenured teachers, counselors and other certified staff last year.
