DA to probe officer-involved shooting in Delta

DELTA — A critical-incident team’s report about an officer-involved shooting of a Delta man on Oct. 23 has been handed over to the 7th Judicial District Attorney’s office in Montrose.

Three Delta police officers, still on administrative leave, reportedly fired in self-defense after Delta resident Larry A. Brown fired several shots from a handgun. Brown died from his wounds.

Delta Police Chief Robert Thomas said Wednesday once the DA’s office releases its conclusions, he plans to make the report available for the community’s inspection.

“At this point I’m not at liberty to say (anything about the report) … I’m awaiting their conclusions,” Thomas said.

According to witnesses, on the evening of Oct. 23, Brown appeared intoxicated and fired a shot into the air from the alley in the 600 block of Grand Avenue. He then walked along the sidewalk onto Grand Avenue as police officers arrived. As the officers tried to contact Brown, he reportedly shot twice in their direction using a semiautomatic pistol, and the officers returned fire, killing Brown.

The three officers were placed on leave as standard procedure, while the 7th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Team along with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation investigated the officer’s use of deadly force.

Thomas said he spoke with Brown’s wife Wednesday, “and Ms. Brown has been exceptionally cooperative. She has been very patient during this unfortunate situation.”

Messages left with the 7th Judicial District Attorney’s Office by The Daily Sentinel weren’t returned Wednesday, and a person handling phone calls said Colorado First Assistant Attorney General Jean Woodford was out for the rest of the week. Woodford has been running the office while District Attorney Myrl Serra faces charges in a criminal case.

“Like I told Ms. Brown, once we have the report we will make it available to the public, because everybody has the right to know what happened,” Thomas said. “This has been a very tragic event for our community.”
