Deadline on Monday to apply to serve on schools’ budget panel
Monday is the last day School District 51 residents can apply to become part of the district’s Budget Development and Oversight Committee.
The district already received 45 emails from people interested in joining the committee. District 51 will compile a list of names Tuesday of the people who sent emails or responded to postcards requesting they consider committee membership. The District Accountability Committee and the District 51 Board of Education will review the candidates next week.
The board plans to announce the final members of the committee during its Dec. 13 meeting. The committee will include 10 community members and representatives from the School Board, the Mesa Valley Education Association, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The association is a teacher-representative group.
Committee members will learn about the district’s budget process and advise the School Board about which budget items should be trimmed, which ones should stay, and how the district can be more efficient.
The committee will begin meeting monthly in January. Committee members will be expected to attend a series of community meetings in early 2012 to gather citizen input about the district’s 2012–13 budget.
