Death looks suspicious to deputies at scene

CHRISTOPHER TOMLINSON/The Daily Sentinel—Mesa County sheriff’s deputies investigate the area on Bureau of Land Management land southeast of Grand Junction where the body of a man was discovered Sunday.

A man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound Sunday afternoon in the desert east of Grand Junction, an official from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators were dispatched after noon Sunday to Bureau of Land Management land east of C Road and 34 Road on the report of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound,” spokeswoman Cindy Barnett said.

When investigators arrived, however, the scene appeared suspicious and officers opened an investigation, Barnett added.

The victim’s name and age were not released.

The BLM land where the body was found was closed for several hours Sunday, but has reopened, the Sheriff’s Office said.
