Debate team speaks up about fundraiser
The Fruita Monument Speech and Debate team has little time to raise enough money to fund their upcoming competitive loop, which may include regional and national competitions.
The team is hosting a spirit night to kick off the new school year and debating season, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Weds., Aug. 18 at Pablo’s Pizza, 456 Kokopelli Blvd., No. C, in Fruita. A percentage of the evening’s sales is being donated to the team.
The 12-member team collected many medals and ribbons last year, including six students who competed on the state level. Four of those competitors continued to the national championship tournament in Kansas City in June.
The team competes annually in Delta, Montrose, Moffat County, Denver, Boulder and Wyoming. The fundraiser will help cover overnight expenses and bus rentals during the tournaments.
The members would greatly appreciate the community support at the fundraiser. They intend not only to do well this year but also plan to “give the town of Fruita a positive reputation in the forensics world,” said Betsy Connor, president.
