Definition of a gun nut
Franklin Sain may be the NRA’s worst nightmare.
No, he’s not a gun-control advocate or a legislator pushing new laws that would infringe on Second Amendment rights. Just the opposite.
Sain, a Colorado Springs resident, is a vehement opponent of new gun laws — so much so, police say, that he wrote emails and made phone calls attacking a black, female lawmaker from Denver who has sposored gun-control legislation. In those communications, Sain used the most vile of racial and sexual epithets to refer to Rep. Rhonda Fields.
He also said of Fields and another lawmaker, “Hopefully, somebody Giffords your asses,” referring to former Arizona Rep. Gabriella Giffords, who was wounded in a shooting.
Sain was arrested Friday after police said an unsigned letter to Fields also came from Sain. It said, according to Westword online, “I’m coming for you, N***** B****.” He faces charges of harassment and attempt to influence a public servant.
Every responsible gun owner should be appalled at Sain’s actions. He has added fuel to the anti-gun stereotype of irresponsible, violent gun owners who can’t be trusted with weapons.
Ironically, despite his fanatical belief in his right to own guns, Sain could very well lose that right. One of the charges against him is a felony, and if he is convicted of it, he would be prohibited by federal and state law from owning guns or ammunition. If he’s guilty, that would be entirely appropriate.
