Deister’s sentencing signal

Jared Ahlstrom is not going to win any boyfriend-of-the-year awards. Twice he slipped an abortion drug to his pregnant girlfriend without her knowledge, causing her to miscarry the second time. Later, he confessed to her what he had done.

It was that confession that led to Ahlstrom’s prosecution on a felony charge of unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Ahlstrom pleaded guilty to the charge in February, and Monday District Judge Tom Deister sentenced Ahlstrom to five years in prison.

Deister said he took into consideration Ahlstrom’s confession to the crime. But he also said a prison sentence was necessary to deter others from committing similar acts. “People cannot be allowed to think they can terminate pregnancies without the consent of the mom.”

Deister is absolutely right. Prison time is appropriate.
